The SCA Annual Coaches Conference will be held on

September 18th and 19th in Regina at The Ramada Hotel

 

This year’s conference promises to offer expertise from national and local professionals, as well as our annual coaches social.  The conference sessions and coaches social will provide a unique opportunity to learn new skills, grow and develop your program, and to network with others from within our Cheer Community!
 
This conference our focus will be on preparing for comparative scoring with sessions on scoring, stunting and strength training. There will also be many professional development sessions focused on inclusion, safety and long-term athlete development. In addition, we are once again offering a full day of sessions to our Coaches in Training – with specialty sessions specifically designed for our junior coaches!
 
We are SO excited to bring everyone together this year to connect, lead and inspire each other as we emerge from the challenges of the pandemic.

2 Day Lunch Ticket – $20  We are excited to offer a fresh, healthy lunch buffet on both days of the conference for a reduced fee. We encourage coaches to purchase lunch tickets in order to maximize their time networking!
 
 

The 2021 SCA Coaches’ Conference is one you won’t want to miss!

The SCA subsidizes our annual coaches’ conference in order to keep our fees as low as possible for our members, and this year our early bird conference admission for SCA members is only $80! Regular admission is $100.  Admission includes access to all scheduled cheer and performance cheer sessions with a variety of presenters, admission to the coaches’ social Saturday evening, access to our cheer vendors and much more! Conference admission for non-members is $120.

Your SCA executive director and board are busily preparing a schedule full of educational sessions.   A more detailed schedule will be made available once all of our sessions have been confirmed.  Please check back often for updates.

Hotel

The Ramada Hotel is happy to offer a rate of $99/room plus applicable taxes for our conference.  The SCA has a block of rooms reserved.  All events are being hosted at this hotel and we encourage our out-of-town guests to stay at the Ramada for your convenience.  call 306-569-1444 or email regina@saskramada.com and ask for block code SKCHEER.  Book by August 27th to guarantee this room rate.

Guest Presenters

Stephany De Rosa

A legend in the cheerleading world, Stephany has been involved in cheerleading for over 20 years. Stephany is a multi-time medalist at the IASF World Championships as both an athlete and coach, taking home a bronze medal at the 2018 & 2019 World Championships with the Small Coed team, Flyers Lightening. Stephany is a well-known Canadian choreographer and has worked with many successful University programs. Her success in choreographing for the IASF International score sheet speaks for itself as she has coached 10 qualifying worlds teams (5 of which made it to the podium for Worlds Globes). She is also a coach for the Team Canada All Girl Premier team. Stephany sees what others may miss and her optimism, technical skills, and talent have brought her to the Team Canada staff. 

Sara Lawson

Sara has been involved in the performing arts community since childhood.  She has trained at a variety of dance studios across Saskatchewan completing full examination syllabi in Ballet through the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), as well as in Tap and Jazz through the Canadian Dance Teachers’ Association (CDTA) and Associated Dance Arts for Professional Teachers (ADAPT). During her training, Sara had the privilege of performing across Canada, the United States and Brazil.  She had the opportunity to professionally dance with City Centre Dance Company in contemporary dance for their opening season.

Following her dance training, Sara had decided to continue with instructor training.  She is a Registered Ballet Teacher with the RAD, Associate of the RAD, Tutor for the CBTS Teacher Training program with the RAD, Member of the CDTA Stage Division (Jazz), Associate Member of the CDTA Modern and Ballet Divisions, Certified Acrobatic Arts Instructor, Certified Yoga Instructor through Namaskar Yoga (Yoga Alliance) and Certified in Total Barre (Merrithew).  

Sara’s passion for dance has also been a part of her career pursuits.  Sara has completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Bachelor of Science in Biology, and Master of Physical Therapy along with numerous post-graduate courses and certifications to advance her training.  Most recently, Sara has a special interest with pre-professional and professional dancers and artistic athletes.  Sara has worked as the Lead Physiotherapist for the Alberta Ballet Company and Alberta Ballet School.  Since 2019, Sara has acted as a Proud Supporter of the Saskatchewan Roughrider Cheer team working as the team Physiotherapist on and off game days.

Sara was also involved in research studies for the University of Calgary on Injury Prevention for Dancers, as well as providing lectures on safe dance practice and injury prevention throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan.  Sara has been able to continue to promote safe dance practice through past involvement with Healthy Dancer Canada as well as acting as the Director and Founder of Empower Movement Studio workshops and educational programming.  Empower Movement Studio focuses on the essential education needed for artistic athletics, athletes and the public to stay healthy and injury free.

Sara is the owner/operator of Empower Physiotherapy and strives to “empower” others toward improving their health and well being through education and movement.  She is looking forward to sharing knowledge and networking during the SCA Coaches conference.

Jennifer Ingham

Jennifer is the founder and owner of Gridders Cheerleading in Yorkton, SK.  She works during the day as a high school teacher and school counsellor at the Yorkton Regional High School where she also coaches the YRHS Cheer Team.   In the evenings and weekends Jennifer spends her time at the gym, coaching and guiding her athletes and co-coaches.  She currently occupies the role of Secretary Treasurer on the Saskatchewan Cheerleading Association Board of Directors and chairs the SCA Finance Committee.  Jennifer is also a member of the Cheer Canada Scholastic Committee and Cheer Canada Coaching Committee.  She is a strong believer in life-long learning, acknowledging that knowledge is power, and is always encouraging those around her to continue striving to better themselves.

Carley Weisbeck

Carley has been involved in the Saskatchewan cheerleading industry since 2004 and has fulfilled many different roles since. She has spent time as an athlete, coach and an SCA board member. She is also a certified IASF safety judge, and a Cheer Canada panel judge specializing in tumbling. Previous to being involved in cheerleading, she has a background in women’s artistic gymnastics as both an athlete and a coach. Carley enjoys coaching all levels of tumbling within her gym, and enjoys experimenting with new drills and equipment.  Her experience contributes to her dimensional coaching approach specializing in fundamentals. 

Ashley Stevenson

Ashley started her career in cheerleading in 2006 as an athlete. Ashley has been a SCA certified coach since 2009. Currently Ashley is a level 6 certified coach and coaches with Warman Ultimate Cheerleading. Ashley was a member of the SCA board for 8 years as a member at large, coaching director and president. Ashley also had the privilege to serve cheerleading on the national level as a member at large on Cheer Canada’s board of directors for 2 years. In those years Ashley’s passion flourished. Ashley is looking forward to the newest venture in our sport as the Administrative Assistant to Alissa Stewart.

Kendra Jackson

Kendra has been involved in the cheerleading community for 10 years. She started as an athlete at Marion Graham high school in Saskatoon and after graduating moved to judging. She has held positions coaching at WUC, GA and is currently coaching at Boss Athletics. In 2020, Kendra was certified as a Cheer Canada judges’ trainer for the SCA.
Kendra is currently working at Boss Athletics and Gymnastics Adventure working with their CITs (coaches in training) and loving watching them develop their coaching skills. 

Eric Bestvater

Eric Bestvater is the owner and head coach of Rebels Cheerleading Athletics in Regina. He has been involved in Cheerleading since 2003, competing with UofR for several years before opening Rebels in 2007. He has experience coaching levels 1-7, and works with athletes of all levels through private lessons and group tumbling classes.

Alissa Stewart

Alissa Stewart is from Regina, Saskatchewan and is the full time executive director for the Saskatchewan Cheerleading Association. Alissa has a strong background in dance and cheerleading with over 20 years experience as a performer, athlete, coach and official. Recently, Alissa was selected as the Cheer Canada performance cheer officials trainer and assisted in developing the Cheer Canada dance scoresheest and scoring methodology. 

Jade Baiton

Session Information

Introduction to Inclusive Language – Meg Hadland, UR Pride

Learn how to communicate in a more inclusive and effective way! In this workshop, participants will learn how, when, and why to use non-gendered and gendered language, and how language affects the way we see the world around us.

Level 2 Stunts – Stephany De Rosa

Stephany will work through level 2 skills with a demo stunt group, presenting ideas on creativity, technique and difficulty that will help improve scores. This session will be interactive, with Stephany answering questions and giving pointers along the way.

Body Confidence & Nutrition - Sara Lawson
Key Points:
-Nutrition topics for artistic athletes
-Injury Prevention through use of healthy food choices and hydration
-Healthy Body Image – promotion with athlete and coach language, actions, and mindset
-Current literature recommendations for balanced food choices 
Level 3 Stunts – Stephany De Rosa

Core Strength & Stability - Sara Lawson
Key Points:
-Anatomy overview of the core musculature, posture, and neutral alignment
-Clearing up confusion of what core stability actually is and its importance with training 
-How do we train core with the advanced cheer and tumbling athletes 
-Strength and Stability recommended exercises specific to cheer and training the artistic athlete
CIT: Hands-On Beginner Stunts – Ashley Stevenson

In this active session, coaches in training will learn the fundamentals of instructing level 1 stunts and the progressions that lead to level 2 stunts. 

CITs will be able to:

  • Identify safety concerns, proper technique and different ways to introduce and progress through the skills. 
  • Leave with an understanding of the rules and the progressions built within them.
  • Try the skills themselves and understand different age needs and concerns.
  • Gain insight to questions they may be asked during the level 1 in-person exam
Owner’s Circle: Round Table

SCA directors, event producers and club owners/admin will come together to discuss the upcoming 2021-2022 season. Topics will include return to sport post Covid-19, keeping teens in sport, SCA programming and partnerships, Cheer Canada growth & development, comparative scoring implications & concerns, sportsmanship & club culture and growing the sport of cheerleading in Saskatchewan.

Level 4 Stunts – Stephany De Rosa

Stephany will work through level 4 skills with a demo stunt group, presenting ideas on creativity, technique and difficulty that will help improve scores. This session will be interactive, with Stephany answering questions and giving pointers along the way.

Training the Adolescent Athlete - Sara Lawson
Key Points:
-Discussion of growth spurts, physical and mental changes with growth spurts, and risk of injuries during this time period
-Ways coaches can adjust to the growing athlete during training
-Considerations for the adolescent athlete on an individual basis to prevent injury, maintain interest in their sport, and promote healthy body image
CIT: Hands-On Beginner Tumbling – Carley Weisbeck

In this active session, coaches in training will learn the fundamentals of instructing level 1 tumbling skills and the progressions. CIT will be able to:

  • Identify safety concerns, cues and drills, and different ways to introduce and progress through the level 1 skills. 
  • Proper spotting techniques and holds for young athletes
  • Spot the skills themselves and understand different age needs and concerns.
  • Gain insight to questions they may be asked during the level 1 in-person exam

Tips for Comparative Scoring: Scholastic Cheer - Alissa Stewart

This session will offer scholastic cheer coaches the perspective from an experienced judge who will provide insight into the comparative scoring system, explanations for the three scholastic scoresheets, clarity of scoring methodologies and at level skills, and answer any questions coaches may have.

CIT: Be the Best Employee - Jennifer Ingham

New coaches will learn the skills, responsibilities, and characteristics of becoming confident, reliable, and independent employees. Jennifer will guide coaches on the proper steps to becoming certified and other initiatives they can take to become the best coach they can be.

Tips for Comparative Scoring: Performance Cheer - Alissa Stewart

This session will offer performance cheer coaches the perspective from an experienced judge who will provide insight into the comparative scoring system, explanations for the three performance cheer scoresheets, clarity of scoring methodologies and answer any questions coaches may have. Throughout the session Alissa will offer ideas and tips on how to increase your scores in each scoring section and key differences between the three performance cheer categories.

High Level Tumbling Drills – Eric Bestvater

This session will feature drills and progressions for layouts, twists, and elite tumbling passes for levels 6, 7 and premier athletes.

Tips for Comparative Scoring: Building - Stephany De Rosa

This session will offer cheer coaches the perspective from an experienced judge who will provide insight on the building scoresheet relative to the comparative scoring system, clarity of scoring methodologies and answer any questions coaches may have. Throughout the session Stephany will offer ideas and tips on how to increase your scores on the building scoresheet.

CIT: Comparative Scoring Basics - Kendra Jackson

This session will offer CITs the perspective from an experienced judge who will provide insight into the comparative scoring system.  Kendra will introduce the various scoresheets, explain the specifics of what judges are looking for, explain why routines might be choreographed a specific way and answer any questions coaches may have.

How to Make Score Check Work for You - Stephany De Rosa

Learn the tips a tricks for being successful at score check. Be the best advocate you can be for your team.

Tips for Comparative Scoring: Overall - Ashley Herchak

This session will offer cheer coaches the perspective from an experienced judge who will provide insight on the overall scoresheet relative to the comparative scoring system, clarity of scoring methodologies and answer any questions coaches may have. Throughout the session Ashley will offer ideas and tips on how to increase your scores on the overall scoresheet.

CIT: Setting Goals – Jade Baiton

Work with Jade on developing your short-term and long-term goals in coaching. What do you want to achieve? How can you get there? Why do you want to coach?
