Performance Cheer Technical Coaching Course
Beginning with the 2026–2027 season, SCA is updating the Performance Cheer technical certification pathway to better align with Cheer Canada’s requirements.
Previously, SCA did not require a formal Performance Cheer technical education course. Instead, coaches submitted proof of coaching/instructional hours to demonstrate their technical training and experience.
Moving forward, this requirement will be replaced by formal technical coach education through the ICU Education Platform, using the Global Coaching Techniques (GCT) – Performance Cheer pathway.
This change ensures Performance Cheer coaches complete a recognized technical education component as part of their certification pathway.
ICU Global Coaching Techniques
Coaches must complete:
- Module A – Global Coaching Techniques: Foundational coaching principles, training concepts and athlete development.
- Module B – Performance Cheer: Discipline-specific education covering athlete safety, technical development, conditioning, fundamental skills and perfection before progression.
Module A must be completed before Module B. Each module includes educational content and knowledge assessments.
Successful completion of both modules earns the ICU Global Coaching Techniques Certificate and Blue Medallion, valid for four years.
Cost: $65 USD for both modules.
NEW PERFORMANCE CHEER COACHES
To become certified, coaches must:
- Complete ICU Global Coaching Techniques (GCT) – Performance Cheer Modules A & B through the ICU Education Platform.
- Complete the SCA Online Technical Evaluation.
Coaches must complete both requirements before coaching independently.
RECERTIFYING PERFORMANCE CHEER COACHES
Coaches who already hold an SCA Performance Cheer certification are currently exempt from completing the ICU GCT courses.
When their existing SCA online exam expires, coaches must:
- Complete the SCA Online Technical Recertification Evaluation.
Note: ICU education requirements for recertifying coaches may be updated as the Performance Cheer certification pathway continues to develop.
