NCCP Requirements For All Star, Scholastic, and Performance Coaches

Making Ethical Decisions (MED)

After completing the NCCP Making Ethical Decisions module, you will be able to: analyze a challenging situation and determine if it has moral, legal or ethical implications; and apply the NCCP Ethical Decision-Making Model to properly respond to each situation in a way that is consistent with the NCCP Code of Ethics.

Emergency Action Planning

The NCCP Emergency Action Plan Module prepares coaches to respond calmly, quickly, and effectively if a sport participant is seriously injured during practice or competition. This NCCP module is free and available online through the Locker.

Planning a Practice

After completing the NCCP Planning a Practice module, you will be able to: organize a well-structured practice plan with safe, age-appropriate activities you’ve designed to match the proficiency level of participants; identify potential risk factors that could impact the sport and practice activities; create an emergency action plan; and identify practice goals and design activities that offer the best training benefits for the athletic skills required in your sport.

Understanding the Rule of Two

The goal of the Rule of Two is to ensure all interactions and communications are open, observable and justifiable. It is one of three pillars of the Responsible Coaching Movement, along with background screening and ethics training. This eLearning will take approximately 20 minutes to complete and is available in the Locker.

Making Headway

NCCP Making Head Way in Sport is the NCCP’s free, online answer to the prevalence and ambiguity of concussions in sport. Parents, coaches, and athletes all benefit from knowing as much as possible about concussions; this online learning tool is designed to help coaches gain the knowledge and skills required to ensure the safety of their athletes.

Safe Sport Training

Safe, inclusive sport environments help make sport rewarding and enriching for all. By completing Safe Sport Training you will gain the knowledge and skills to create healthy and safe environments by recognizing, addressing and preventing maltreatment in sport. The Training is available online through the Locker at no cost.

NCCP Requirements for Cheer Coaches – Levels 3, 4, Median, and Advanced

Design a Basic Sport Program

After completing the NCCP Design a Basic Sport Program module, you will be able to: develop a program structure based on opportunities for training and competition; establish indicators of athlete development in the program; and develop practice plans that reflect seasonal training priorities.

Teaching and Learning

The NCCP Teaching and Learning module is designed help less experienced coaches develop their coaching skills. Learning Outcomes include: Implement an appropriately structured and organized practice; and Make interventions that promote learning and development. 

Basic Mental Skills

The goal of the NCCP Basic Mental Skills module is to support coaches in developing mental skills in their day-to-day practice as a coach. Learning outcomes include: Integrate mental-preparation strategies into practices; and Help participants be mentally prepared for competition

Sport Nutrition

This module helps coaches understand how to support athletes and their parents or caregivers in making effective nutrition choices. After completing the module, you will be able to: explain the basic nutritional needs of an athlete; take appropriate measures to ensure that athletes stay hydrated during exercise; educate athletes on the use of nutritional supplements and sports drinks; encourage a positive body image in their athletes; identify the different types of disordered eating; support athletes with special nutritional needs; identify common food allergies and intolerances; provide accurate guidance to athletes and their parents or caregivers on nutrition before, during, and after exercise.; and provide accurate nutritional guidance to athletes and their parents or caregivers before and during travel.

Develop Athletic Abilities

After completing the NCCP Developing Athletic Abilities module, you will be able to: identify athletic abilities required in your athletes’ sport; evaluate athletes’ abilities and interpret data to prescribe training; understand training principles, methods, and protocols; and develop and prescribe training protocols specific to your athletes’ age and state of development.

Prevention and Recovery 

Injuries in sport are preventable. However, successfully preventing injuries requires a great deal of planning and constant monitoring. The NCCP Prevention and Recovery module provides strategies and techniques to prevent injury, while also improving performance. These 2 concepts are closely connected. Strategies that help with 1 of the concepts, directly influence the other. After finishing this module, coaches will be able to design a personalized Prevention Action Plan (PAP), which will enhance their athletes’ performance and assist in preventing injuries.

Advanced Practice Planning 

The NCCP Advanced Practice Planning module examines the impact of daily training sequencing, and the manipulations that can affect training outcomes. This module is an ideal follow-up to NCCP Planning a Practice. Coaches are advised to take the NCCP Performance Planning module before taking NCCP Advanced Practice Planning.

Performance Planning

The NCCP Performance Planning module allows coaches to reflect on the structure of a yearly plan and appropriately sequence training and development priorities so as to achieve peak performance in their athletes. After completing module, you will be able to: perform a thorough analysis of the demands of your athletes’ sport at the elite (high performance) level; outline a program structure based on training and competition opportunities; identify appropriate measures for promoting athlete development within our own program; integrate yearly training priorities into your own program; organize and sequence training priorities and objectives on a weekly basis to optimize adaptations; and evaluate the ability of your athletes or team to perform up to their potential in competition.

Coaching and Leading Effectively

After finishing this module, coaches will have drafted a personalized coaching philosophy. In particular, they’ll be able to: Develop a coaching philosophy based on the reflections of values and how and why one coaches; Demonstrate behaviours to create an inclusive, safe, positive sport environment; Demonstrate an understanding of the leadership role in the broader sport community; and Develop opportunities to foster a culture based on excellence, positive performance, and growth in sport

Psychology of Performance

The goal of the NCCP Psychology of Performance module is to support coaches in developing mental skills in their day-to-day practice as a coach. Learning outcomesinclude: Identify the focus skills that will help athletes achieve their goals in training and in competition; Train athletes in the focus skills that will help them achieve their goals in training and in competition; Work with athletes or teams to identify appropriate outcome, performance and process goals; and Use debriefing skills to work with athletes and assess their performance in training and in competition

NCCP Managing Conflict

NCCP Managing Conflict introduces new and experienced coaches to the impact of conflict on sport in their day-to-day coaching practice. This module teaches key skills for achieving positive outcomes using effective conflict management techniques. After completing the NCCP Managing Conflict training module, coaches will be able to: Identify common sources of conflict in sport; Take steps to prevent and resolve conflict resulting from misinformation, miscommunication or misunderstanding; and Listen and speak for themselves in conflict situations to maintain positive and healthy relationships with athletes, parents, guardians, officials, other coaches and administrators

SCA Scheduled Training

SCA coaches can attend one of the several training sessions set-up by the SCA.  These sessions are only offered to SCA coaches, therefore you can expect the breakout sessions and conversations to be more relevant to cheerleading.  These courses are at a reduced cost.  Space may be limited.

Coaches Association of Saskatchewan

In Saskatchewan, the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan (CAS) provides NCCP training.  These multi-sport training sessions are offered to all coaches in Saskatchewan.  SCA coaches may choose to attend courses offered by the CAS.
