The SCA now uses the Cheer Canada Technical Coaching Courses and Evaluations for cheer coach technical certification. These replace the former SCA ClassMarker technical exams and SCA in-person technical evaluations.

The Cheer Canada Technical Coaching Courses are completed online and asynchronously, allowing coaches to work through the material on their own schedule.

The courses provide coaches with the knowledge and tools needed to safely teach cheer skills at their coaching level.

The technical certification process includes:

• Online Cheer Canada Technical Coaching Course
• Technical instruction for teaching skills
• Skill progressions and drills
• Physical literacy
• Biomechanics and body mechanics
• Hands-on Technical Evaluation (available beginning September 1)

Technical certification does not include other SCA coach certification requirements, such as:

• Respect in Sport
• First Aid/CPR
• NCCP courses
• Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check and other required safety requirements

These requirements must be completed separately as outlined in the SCA Coach Certification Requirements & Pathways.

Technical Progression

Coaches must be technically certified for the highest level they are actively coaching.

A coach who wishes to move to a higher level must complete the required Cheer Canada Technical Coaching Course and Evaluation for that level before coaching independently at the higher level.

Transition to the Cheer Canada Technical Certification Process

Coaches who already hold a valid SCA technical certification do not need to immediately complete the new Cheer Canada process.

• Current SCA technical certifications will continue to be recognized until their existing expiry date.
• When an SCA technical certification expires, the coach must transition to the Cheer Canada Technical Coaching Course and Evaluation for their coaching level.
• Coaches wishing to advance to a higher level must complete the applicable Cheer Canada Technical Coaching Course and Evaluation, even if their existing lower-level SCA certification has not yet expired.
